Person inserting clear orthodontic retainer over teeth.

Retainers

Clear retainers are used after your fixed appliance treatment is complete. These are worn every night for a year, and a few nights thereafter for as long as you want your teeth to remain in the same position following treatment. As your teeth will always want to return to their position before treatment was carried out (this movement is greatest in the first year following your orthodontic treatment), retainers should be worn every night for a year. Following this, they should be worn for a few nights a week thereafter, as your teeth will always want to return to their pre-treatment position, and your teeth will move as you get older, which is seen especially as overlap of the lower front teeth.
