Growth modification
A removable appliance called a Twin Block is frequently used to reduce the prominence of the upper teeth. Prominent upper teeth that are not covered by the lips at rest are prone to trauma, and treatment can be carried out to reduce their prominence, retracting them to allow lip closure and reduce the risk of damage to the front teeth.
A Twin Block appliance consists of an upper and lower removable appliance which are worn all the time. It works by retracting the upper teeth and proclining the lower teeth, thereby reducing the horizontal distance between the upper and lower teeth. There is also a small element of increased growth of the lower jaw during treatment, helping it to grow to its maximum potential, which is why these appliances are best used when children are growing. You will not be left with a prominent lower jaw if these appliances are used!
